Astral Projection

Lesson 3 - Relaxation Techniques and Astral Methods

Progressive Relaxation

This is a great way to relieve any tenseness you may have. Start with your toes, and tighten them up, hold, and release. Work your way up, focusing on each body part until you have gone all the way up to your head. Or you can start with your toes and mentally tell them to relax, stating your desire in present tense form. "My toes are completely relaxed." Once again, move up to each respective body part.

Tips

Here is a list of tips to improve chances of astral travel. You can use it as a checklist before you project if you wish.

1. Read books on astral projection or listen to tapes - These can set the mind frame for projection and make it easier to achieve. You can listen to tapes that guide you through astral travel or you could listen to songs, with or without words, that remind you of projection.

2. Imagine yourself astral projecting, and see experiences in detail - Imagining yourself astral projecting over and over puts you in the right mindset to project. It gives your mind a visual message telling it that you desire to project, and eventually it will move to achieve that goal.

3. Fasting. - Many people have said that this is helpful, so you may want to give it a try and decide for yourself, or try eating only light foods before projection.

4. Set a certain time of the day to project - It helps to condition your mind to get ready for astral travel at a certain time each week, day, or whenever you choose to project. It is best to work in the morning because you have already rested and your mind is still in a close to hypnapompic state.

5. Use the bathroom before trying projection. - You don't want to be disturbed in the middle of an interesting projection just because you have to empty your bladder, so its best to get it over with before you start.

6. Give yourself good reason for wanting to project. - This will increase your focus and your motivation and make it easier to do. Most often we will try harder when we have a set goal in mind.

7. Don't do any drugs before projection and wait at least 3 hours after smoking a cigarette or drinking coffee. - Drugs will more often than not hinder rather than help projection, and so will other stimulants. Also, those who use drugs to achieve projection often find themselves drawn in negative situations and the lower astral.

9. Make sure your clothes are loose and that you have nothing restricting on, such as jewelry. - You will want your energy to be flowing as smoothly as possibly. Get your body as comfortable as you can before attempting astral travel.

10. Make sure you're at a comfortable temperature. - You don't want to be too warm or too cold. If you are, you'll end up focusing more on that than you will your projection.

11. Find somewhere quiet. - You really don't want a lot of noise to distract you. If you have to, turn off the ringer on your phone so you don't get pulled back quickly if it rings. Put a "Don't disturb" sign on your door if you feel it is necessary.

12. Dim lighting. - A lot of light will distract you, and you probably won't want to come back in complete darkness either, so keep a little bit of lighting in the room.

13. Incense, herbs, or oils - This may help achieve an altered state of consciousness more easily. Sandalwood, lotus oil, and jasmine are helpful in achieving astral projection, but you may want to check out others to see their uses as well.

14. Meditation, visualization, and proper breathing - All of these will help you along with astral  projection, and will help you relax.

15. Protective measures - These will give you added protection while astral and help you relax.

Please be aware that it can take you anywhere from just a few days of practice to a couple of years before you successfully project. People work at different speeds, and astral projection is like any other skill; it takes time to develop, and it comes easier to some people than others. Don't be discouraged if it takes you longer than you expected. If you work hard enough at it, and your intentions are good, then eventually you will learn to project. It's just a matter of time and effort.

Exercises for Astral Projection

Ah yes, here is the part you have probably been waiting for. Here is a collection of different exercises to induce astral projection. You should probably choose one that you feels best to you and focus on it for a couple of weeks instead of jumping from technique to technique. Remember that you do not have to follow an exercise step-by-step. Take what you need and forget the rest. One of the main aims of astral projection techniques is to make the physical body fall asleep while you keep the mind focused and alert, so that your astral body may make a conscious exit from your body.

Before doing any of these, make sure you are relaxed. Use the methods in the previous section to reach this state.

Hypnagogic Method

The hypnagogic state can be described as the state between sleep and waking, in which spontaneous images and sounds go through your head, lasting only a few seconds each. You're still semiconscious in this state, so astral projection can be achieved here. Transform a picture, color, shape, etc. into a portal in which you can begin astral travel. For example, if you start seeing all sorts of shapes floating everywhere, mentally transform them into tunnels, windows, doors, or 3-d figures that you can step into and use as a bridge to the astral.

Rope Method

Visualize a rope coming from your most active chakra. If you are not sure of your most active chakra, see it coming out from the place that would seem most comfortable to you. Astral projector Robert Bruce suggests that you don't actually try to see the rope; see yourself trying to climb this robe in darkness, so you only feel what you are doing. Imagine you are reaching out and climbing the robe. After a while, you may start to feel a moving sensation in your hands or torso. Try not to focus on the sensations you are feeling, but keep focused on what you are doing instead. When you find yourself free of your body, try not to get too excited, and focus on where you are trying to go.

Lucid Dream Method

You can use this when you find yourself in a lucid dream. First off, I'd like to give you a few tips to induce lucid dreams. Several times through the day, try looking at your watch once, looking away, and looking back and asking yourself if you're dreaming. This habit may carry over in your dreams. In your dream, the numbers will most likely change between the first time and the second time you look at it. Once you realize this is a dream, tell yourself that you wish to astral project. Another method for inducing lucid dreams is to tell yourself several times before going to sleep, "I am dreaming," or "I am having a lucid dream." Or you may wish to form this into a question if you feel it will work better for you. Once again, if you do realize you are having a dream later, tell yourself to astral project. This method is a little more difficult because you have less control over it, but it still works.

Bar Method

This one is a little similar to the rope method. Once you've gotten relaxed and your physical body is feeling heavy, start visualizing a bar above you, within reaching distance. Feel your astral arms reaching up and grabbing onto the bar, and slowly start swaying your astral body back and forth. Start with small increments at first, and work you way up to larger swaying. Eventually, you should feel yourself swaying enough to work your way out of your body.

Chakra Method

This is one in which you project yourself out through one of your chakras. To discover which chakra you would like to use, check my page on chakras here. Once you have chosen the one you believe is your strongest chakra, cleanse and balance each chakra, especially the one you have chosen. Try to feel the energy flowing through your chakras. Try to focus your consciousness on the area of the chakra that you have chosen, until you feel as if you truly are situated in that area. Now try to open the chakra even further, and will yourself to slip through that opening. From here you should be free to travel where you wish.

Push and Pull Method

The purpose of this exercise is to induce the swaying motion that will allow you to separate from your physical body. Visualize a cord attached to your third eye chakra, or another chakra of your choice. Now visualize your spirit guide holding the other end of the cord. Watch as they begin to gently pull on the cord and then relax their grip. After a while, you may begin to feel yourself swaying. Keep up with this, seeing the guide gradually beginning to pull more and more as the swaying increases, until you are free from your physical body.

Vibrational Method

Many times you may feel vibrations or hear a buzzing sound as you are close to separating from your physical body. In this method, you must imagine that you are hearing a buzzing sound.  After a while, you may actually tune in enough to hear a buzzing sound without having to imagine it. Slowly try to raise the pitch so that it matches that of your astral body. You will probably begin to feel vibrations, and as you raise the pitch of the buzzing sound, you will also raise the vibrations you are feeling, until you feel you are ready to separate.
